Finding an opportunity to turn a dearth of information into a future resource.
I was asked to evaluate a video tutorial for a mobile health app and make recommendations for future tutorials. After an extensive search, I was unable to find any useful guidelines for the creation of video tutorials. I decided my best course of action would be to create a heuristic evaluation.
An environmental scan was made from a wide variety of video tutorials. The comments sections in particular were reviewed for both positive and negative user remarks. In addition, classroom teaching methods were studied and incorporated into the scan. The results were collected and categorized into three main sections: Production, Presentation, and Content. A heuristic evaluation form was created and used by multiple evaluators. The results were scored for inter-rater reliability. A high concurrence between raters gave us confidence that the heuristic was well constructed. The client was presented with the results and recommendations based on the evaluation. The heuristic was further re-worked to provide a pre-production checklist to make future tutorial productions more efficient.
